Origin: Switzerland, Plaffeien Flysch (Canton of Fribourg)
Rarity and Swiss origin
Plaffeiite is an exceptionally rare variety of fossilized tree resin, or amber, originating from the Swiss Prealps. This mineraloid is named after the municipality of Plaffeien in the canton of Fribourg. This crystal was formed approximately 55 million years ago, when the region experienced a subtropical climate.
Its occurrence is restricted to a small number of Alpine deposits, making it a very unique crystal. Another fascinating characteristic is its ability to exhibit an intense bluish-white fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Due to its extreme scarcity, limited deposits, and fragile nature, Plaffeiite represents an extraordinary geological treasure and a tangible connection to Switzerland's prehistoric past.
Even though Plaffeite is highly sought after by crystal enthusiasts, it is technically not a gemstone, but a type of fossilized resin.
